Plymouth River School fourth graders came running from recess to the cafeteria hollering, “It’s Harvest Day!”. Their cheers were sparked by the smell of delicious, hot garlic bread drifting up from the cafeteria as the school prepped for this annual celebration held in October.
At this festive event PRS students and staff enjoy bounty from the school garden including roasted potatoes, crispy garlic bread, kale chips and fresh apples. Food used during the meal was planted by PRS students as part of the curriculum enrichment program run by Holly Hill Farm’s Janice McPhillips. All year long students work in the garden learning how to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, compost materials, and build an appreciation for how food is grown and where it comes from.
The garden program is funded by PRS PTO and Harvest Day is organized by the school’s Green Team. It would not be possible without the help and support of PRS cafeteria staff as well as many parent volunteers.
